Research team

Daniel Brooks, DSc, MPH, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Boston University School of Public Health. He was the Research Director for Partners in Health and Housing, a CDC-funded Prevention Research Center that focused on the health of public housing residents, and then Principal Investigator of a randomized trial testing whether use of peer health advocates could increase rates of smoking cessation among public housing residents. He was one of the Principal Investigators on the Early Adopter Study.

Ellen Childs, PhD, is a Health Services Research Associates at Abt Associates. Ellen worked on the Early Adopter Study managing online survey development and distribution, conducting interviews with executive directors, and participating in site visits to public housing authorities. Ellen also coordinated the qualitative data analysis process with the interviews and site visit qualitative data.

Jessica Davine, MPH, MSW, is a Senior Project Manager at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She has worked on several research studies focusing on smoking cessation and smoke-free policies in residential settings. Jessica oversaw the coordination of the SHARE Study, the Building Success Study, and participated in the site visits to public housing authorities.

Alan Geller, MPH, RN, is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Along with Drs. Brooks and Rees, he is one of the Principal Investigators on the Early Adopter Study. His research interests include cancer education, cancer screening, and smoking cessation, with an emphasis on reducing the disproportionate burden of smoking in low-income populations.

John Kane, MPP, is Coordinator of Grants and Strategic Partnerships for the Boston Housing Authority (BHA).  In his position, he has engaged in numerous healthy housing grant-funded research collaborations focused on developing a better understanding of the built environment as well as resident health programs and in turn using that knowledge to improve the health and living conditions of residents. John has been a part of the planning and implementation of the BHA non-smoking policy. His work over the past 15 years has focused on how housing conditions influence a person’s health. His role in Building Success is to advise on the practical aspects of adopting a non-smoking policy in a public housing authority.

Robyn Keske, MSW, MPH, is a Project Director at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She has worked on multiple research initiatives focusing on smoke-free policies in residential settings. Robyn coordinated the Building Success team, participated in the site visits to public housing authorities, and supported development of the Building Success webinar and website.

Vaughan Rees, PhD, is a Senior Lecturer on Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Director of the Center for Global Tobacco Control at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. His research involves development of programs and policies to reduce tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure in low-income communities. He is one of the Principal Investigators of the Early Adopter Study and the Building Success Study. He also conducts research to inform regulatory strategies to reduce harms associated with tobacco and other substance use, including evaluation of the addictive potential of new and novel tobacco products.
